The site probably appeared in the SERPS for his name because there were blog comments with his name in the anchor text.

That is seriously amazing. I didn’t know it worked like that. I always figured the link was valued or devalued for the anchor text of the link. I never thought the link would pass value from words around it. Is it possible that maybe this guy had commented on a bunch of blogs linking back to the site that ranked for his name?
